Since July 2018, Yasar Guler has assumed the role of Chief of the General Staff.
On the occasion of the unveiling of the new ministerial cabinet, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appointed General Yasar Guler as the country’s defense minister.
Since July 2018, Yasar Guler has assumed the role of Chief of the General Staff. His appointment comes shortly after Erdogan was sworn in as the country’s president for a third term, making him Turkey’s longest-ever serving leader.
The new cabinet also includes Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek who previously also held this post, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who occupied the position of Director of the National Intelligence Organization, and who made important contributions in advancing peace efforts to mend Ankara-Damascus relations, and Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, who succeeded Fatih Donmez.
As for the role of Vice President, Cevdet Yilmaz was appointed.
Earlier today, Erdogan was sworn in as Turkey’s President at the parliament in Ankara where he delivered his oath to the Turkish people.
“As president, I swear upon my honor and integrity, before the great Turkish nation … to work with all my power to protect the existence and independence of the state … and to fulfill my duty impartially,” Erdogan said before lawmakers in parliament.
He also vowed not to lead the nation astray from the rule of law and safeguard the secular principles of the republic.
