The US Ambassador to Warsaw, Mark Brzezinski, announced at the signing ceremony of the “Agreements of Intent” that the US Exim Bank will allocate $3 billion to implement a project in Poland to build small nuclear reactors.
The American diplomat indicated another billion for the same purpose, which will be allocated by the Development Finance Corporation.
According to him, the agreements relate to the BWRX-300 reactors designed by Hitachi Nuclear Energy Corporation.
“Poland needs new energy solutions to protect itself from Russian influence, to fulfill climate commitments and to promote economic development,” the ambassador said. He added, “Today we have taken an important step for the future of Poland. Energy will be an important part of Polish-American cooperation over the next 100 years.”
The Polish energy company Olin (ORLEN) intends to build a small nuclear reactor in the current decade and for this purpose, the joint venture ORLEN Synthos Green Energy has been established which should be responsible for the development and marketing of small nuclear reactor technologies in Poland.
Building a BWRX-300 reactor requires about a third of the time it takes to build a conventional large nuclear power plant, and construction costs are reduced by about 30%.
