Grant Shapps, the UK defence secretary, says the Israeli leader’s outright rejection of Palestinians’ right to statehood is “disappointing”.
“I don’t think I can be more explicit; I think it’s disappointing to hear Benjamin Netanyahu saying he doesn’t believe in a two-state solution and a Palestinian statehood. In fairness, he’s said that all of his political career as far as I can tell,” he told the London-based Sky News.
“I don’t think we get to a solution unless we have a two-state solution. So we do disagree on that particular issue, but we do agree that Israel has a right to defend itself and we do think there’s a responsibility to maintain international humanitarian law.
“We don’t interfere in other countries’ democratic processes, be that in Israel or anywhere else,” Shapps said in response to a question on whether different leadership in Israel would improve the situation surrounding the war.
