I’ve been really enjoying Chococo’s Festive Collection, £12.50 for a box of nine filled chocolates (other sizes available) with centres such as Spiced Rum (so good: raisins marinated in Two Drifters rum), Gingerbread Caramel, Tawny Port and Fig (it’s all in the name). This is a great, seasonally named, box to give to someone you really like, but also a fantastic passive- aggressive present for someone who likes to squirrel away gifts and re-purpose them – because unless they act fast, they can’t! While you’re there, Chococo also does a very nice oat ‘milk’ Christmas Bauble filled with honeycomb chocolates, £13.50, and all…

The Ahmad bin Ali Stadium erupted for two reasons when Keysher Fuller’s 14-yard strike proved too high for goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda. Those of a Costa Rica persuasion were delighted to see not only the winner but their nation’s first shot on target of Qatar 2022 after Luis Fernando Suárez’s side drew a blank in their 7-0 drubbing by Spain. It means Group E is wide open because Germany go into Sunday night’s game against Spain as the only country with zero points and yet this result is a definite fillip for them because they face Costa Rica last. For the goal Hidemasa…

lione Messi had seen something: not much but just enough to be everything. An hour had gone and Argentina had been unable to find a way through against Mexico when he approached and had a quiet word. Within a minute, by his teammate’s calculations, he was approaching again. This time he was running, shouting, losing it, leaping into Di María’s arms, his shot having just flown into the Mexico net. He had hit it from exactly where he said he would. This was, he admitted, a “great liberat “We have overcome a difficult test,” Messi said. “Although we trusted in ourselves, in what…

Jürgen Klinsmann has pledged to call Carlos Queiroz in an effort to smooth things over after his contentious comments on the Iran coach and his team. After Friday’s 2-0 win over Wales, the BBC presenter Gabby Logan talked about Iran’s “gamesmanship” and said they just stayed on the right side of the law before handing over to Klinsmann. “Yes, that’s their culture,” he said. “Their way of doing it, and that is why Carlos Queiroz fits really well [with] the Iranian national team.” The former Germany international added: “[Queiroz] struggled in South America, he failed to qualify with Colombia and then…

01:24 PM 22 mins: Belgium 0-0 Morocco Courtois is the coolest player on the pitch as he successfully attempts a Cruyff turn with En-Nesyri charging down on the goalkeeper, before booting the ball clear. 01:23 PM 20 mins: Belgium 0-0 Morocco Better from Morroco – for the first time this match they get their foot on the ball and get into the Belgium half. It comes to Ziyech on the right who cuts in and hits a left-foot shot from distance that doesn’t trouble Courtois. 01:20 PM 18 mins: Belgium 0-0 Morocco It’s still all Belgium – they’re dominated possession…

DOHA, Qatar — U.S. Soccer removed the emblem of the Islamic Republic from the Iranian flag on some of its social media posts as a way of showing support for protests in Iran. A graphic of the World Cup Group B standings posted on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook on Saturday showed a plain green, white and red flag. The banner on the U.S. men’s national team’s Twitter page, which lists the team’s group-stage games at the tournament, was also changed Saturday to feature the Iranian flag without the Islamic Republic emblem. After being up for 24 hours, it was changed back Sunday afternoon to the banner…

AL KHOR, Qatar — The U.S. men’s national team outplayed and at times even dominated England at the World Cup on Friday night, and before we get to the result or the implications, it’s worth letting that sink in. The Americans outran and outclassed the Englishmen. They outthought and almost overwhelmed a 2022 World Cup favorite. They proved that progress is very real and the future is very bright, but, after 90 intense minutes at the Al Bayt Stadium, they had nothing to show for it. They drew with heavily favored England 0-0, and will go into Tuesday, the final day of Group B,…
